MONitoring MArine Ecosystems

The main goal of the MONEMA project ("MONitoring MArine Ecosystems") is to develop an integrated monitoring system to control the marine-coastal environmental quality. The developed system will allow constant monitoring of the physical, chemical and biological components having constant updates on the state of health of the sea. These information help to identify the potential causes of coastal erosion and the changes in the marine ecosystem enabling a fast response by the authority. MONEMA is designed as an interconnection of surface and submarine sensor systems capable of exchanging information with a remote server at the operations centre.
The underwater sensor system (typically multi-parametric probes) has the task of recording information on the physical, biological and chemical state of the sea in real time. The acquired data are, therefore, processed using an automatic system and, through specific indicators, analysed to provide information on the state of the ecosystem. MONEMA presents itself as an innovative technological solution aimed at:

  • Monitor with an ICT infrastructure the national marine ecosystem;
  • Provide to experts useful information to carry out the biological classification of ecosystems in marine protected areas;
  • Monitor any impacts deriving from anthropic activities (i.e. acquaculture, oil platform and pipeline);
  • Allow the scientific community and professionals to act quickly in the presence of anomalous conditions.

The ICT infrastructure involves the design and development of a prototype that includes:

  • Low cost sensors for:
    • measuring the main environmental parameters;
    • wave or current measurements.
  • Electronic sensors interface to acquire the measured data. The electronic board is expandable and allow to integrate sensors with various kinds of interface.
  • Underwater acoustic communication system (modem) used to create an underwater distributed sensor network for measuring the environmental parameters of interest. The modem is used to exchange the acquired data between the sensor nodes (network nodes) installed on the seabed or on the surface. Therefore, it guarantee the routing strategies according to the network topology and the consequent information delivery to one or more central node (surface buoy).
  • Remote communication system
    • It is equipped with the necessary instrumentation for wave and current measurements.
    • It acts as a gateway between the underwater sensor network and the remote management station. For this purpose, it integrates:
      • An underwater acoustic modem for data exchange with the underwater sensor network;
      • A router (4G LTE or NB-IoT) for internet connection to the remote control server;
      • A Wi-Fi access point that enable operators to recovery data and monitoring the system "on site".
  • Remote management system (Web Application). The Web application provide a database of acquired data and a simple user and administrator interface. It is used to configure nodes, visualize real time acquisitions and  analyse historical data series.
